We are looking forward to seeing you at summer orientation. Below, you will find some frequently asked questions to help your family prepare for orientation. If we haven’t answered your question below, please e-mail our office at firstname.lastname@example.org or call our staff at 865-974-2435.

Your student ID (000-xx-xxxx) is located on your VIP (Vol-In-Progress) page under the “Your Decision is Available to View” (click twice) page. You can also register for orientation using your Social Security Number.
Orientation is highly recommended and you will not be able to be advised or register for classes outside of attending orientation. Additionally, orientation will provide you with the tools necessary to be successful in your first year at UT (including important dates, information on campus resources, etc.).
Most academic colleges do not require you to bring a laptop to orientation. However, the Colleges of Engineering and Architecture and Design ask that you bring a laptop or tablet with you to assist during academic advising sessions and course registration.
There is not a deadline. However, spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so we recommend you register as soon as possible.
We are unable to offer fee waivers to attend orientation. However, please e-mail New Student & Family Programs email@example.com for more information about a deferred payment for the orientation fee.
You will need to check your UT e-mail address for your confirmation receipt.
We encourage you to attend summer orientation to have the full orientation experience. However, if you absolutely cannot attend during the summer, we will have orientation sessions for first-year students on August 17 and for transfer students on August 16. Registration for these August sessions will open in mid-July.

Advising and Course Registration
No. Typically you do not need to schedule a separate appointment to meet with your advisor outside of orientation. In fact, orientation is your first chance to meet with an advisor and schedule your first semester’s courses.
Sometimes certain colleges work with transfer students to schedule an advising appointment outside of orientation. If you are a transfer student in the following colleges and would prefer to schedule your advising appointment outside of orientation, email firstname.lastname@example.org to find out if that would be possible for you.

Yes. You may stay in Fred Brown Hall for $40 (private room) or $33 (shared room) per person per night. Pre-registration is required and can be completed (space permitting) at the time of orientation registration. Students and guests will stay on separate floors of the residence hall. Please plan accordingly when packing.
Yes. Students may stay on campus the night before your session for an additional charge of $27 per student per night. Parents and guests may also stay and extra night for $40 (private room) or $33 (shared room) per person per night. No prior reservations are required for early arrival housing, and payment is due at the time of check-in in the form of Visa, MasterCard, or personal check. Students and guests will stay on separate floors of the residence hall. Please plan accordingly when packing.
Students may request to stay together upon arrival at Fred Brown Hall on day one of your orientation session.
Check your UT e-mail account to see if your housing contract is there. If not, you will need to send a request to University Housing (email@example.com) to have your contract resent.
If you will not be living on campus, you will need to complete a residency requirement exemption request.
VolCard (UT Student ID)
Upload your VolCard photo twenty-four hours prior to attending orientation, so you can pick your card up during your session. Visit the VolCard website (http://volcard.utk.edu/photo-upload/) and review the photo submission guidelines.
Students in the Bridge Program do need to pay the $250 enrollment deposit. You will need to confirm your attendance on your VIP (Vol-In-Progess) page. Contact One Stop (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information. Also, Bridge Students must register for an orientation session after confirming attendance on your VIP page.
You will need to have your entry term changed to Summer Entry through Undergraduate Admissions (email@example.com). Once your entry term has been changed, you will need to register for Summer School Orientation. Click here (http://newvols.utk.edu/orientation/registration/) to see the dates for Summer School Orientation.
We do not have a waitlist. However, seats regularly become available, so please login to check the registration system regularly to see if the desired session has become available. There is a $25 fee to change your orientation session. The fee will be assessed online when you complete the change.
You will need to contact One Stop (firstname.lastname@example.org) to request to have your major changed. Please note, some majors and academic programs require additional materials for admission.
If you have a conflict with your current date, login to the registration system to see a list of available sessions. There will be a $25 change fee.
You will need to e-mail the Center for Leadership and Service (email@example.com) and ask to be added to the Ignite waitlist.
If you will not be attending UT, please contact Admissions (firstname.lastname@example.org), New Student & Family Programs (email@example.com), and Housing (firstname.lastname@example.org) and note that you are declining your admission. Refund requests must be made in writing at least ten working days prior to your confirmed orientation session. Please note that a processing fee ($25 for two-day orientation sessions and $10 for one-day orientation sessions) will be subtracted from your refund amount.
