We are looking forward to seeing you at Summer Orientation. Below, you will find some Frequently Asked Questions to help your family prepare for Orientation. If we haven’t answered your question below, please email our office at newvols@utk.edu or call our staff at 865-974-4546.

Student Information

Your student ID (000-xx-xxxx) is located on your VIP (Vol-In-Progress) page under the “Your Decision is Available to View” (click twice) page. You can also register for orientation using your Social Security Number.

Your NetID is located on your VIP (Vol-In-Progress) page under the “Your Decision is Available to View” (click twice) page. You can also look yourself up on the University Directory at http://directory.utk.edu.  Your NetID will be the first part of your UTK email address.

Orientation Basics

Orientation is highly recommended and you will not be able to be advised or register for classes outside of attending Orientation. Additionally, orientation will provide you with the tools necessary to be successful in your first year at UT (including important dates, information on campus resources, etc.).

Most academic colleges do not require you to bring a laptop to Orientation. However, the Colleges of Engineering and Architecture & Design ask that you bring a laptop or tablet with you to assist during academic advising sessions and course registration.

There is not a deadline. However, spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so we recommend you register as soon as possible.

We are unable to offer fee waivers to attend orientation. However, please email New Student & Family Programs newvols@utk.edu for more information about a deferred payment for the Orientation fee.

You will need to check your UT email address for your confirmation receipt.

We encourage you to attend summer Orientation to have the full Orientation experience. However, if you absolutely cannot attend during the summer, we will have orientation sessions for first-year students on August 17-18, and for transfer students on August 19. Registration for these August sessions will open in mid-July.

Advising and Course Registration

No. You do not need to schedule a separate appointment to meet with your advisor outside of Orientation. In fact, orientation is your first chance to meet with an advisor and schedule your first semester’s courses.

Housing

Yes. You may stay in Hess Hall for $21.50 in a double room and $26 in a single room per person per night. No prior reservations are required, and payment is due at the time of check-in in the form of Visa, MasterCard, or personal check. Please note that due to the community-style bathrooms in Hess Hall, students and guests will stay in separate wings, and males and females be placed on separate floors. Yes. Students may stay an extra night for $18.55 per student per night. Parents and guests may also stay and extra night for $21.50 in a double room and $26 in a single room per person per night. No prior reservations are required, and payment is due at the time of check-in in the form of Visa, MasterCard, or personal check. Students may request to stay together upon arrival at Hess. Please note that due to the community-style bathrooms in Hess Hall, students and guests will stay in separate wings, and males and females be placed on separate floors.

Check your UT email account to see if your housing contract is there. If not, you will need to send a request to the Department of University Housing (housing@utk.edu) to have your contract resent.

VolCard (UT Student ID)

Upload your VolCard photo 24 hours prior to attending orientation, so you can pick your card up during your session. Visit the VolCard website (http://volcard.utk.edu/photo-upload/) and review the photo submission guidelines.

Students in the Bridge Program do not need to pay the $250 enrollment deposit. However, you will need to confirm your attendance on your VIP (Vol-In-Progess) page. Contact Undergraduate Admissions (admissions@utk.edu) for more information. Also, Bridge Students must register for an orientation session after confirming attendance on your VIP page.

You will need to have your entry term changed to Summer Entry through Undergraduate Admissions (admissions@utk.edu). Once your entry term has been changed, you will need to register for Summer School Orientation. Orientation Changes

We do not have a waitlist. However, seats regularly become available, so please login to check the registration system regularly to see if the desired session has become available. There is a $25 fee to change your Orientation session.  The fee will be assessed online when you complete the change.

You will need to contact Undergraduate Admissions (admissions@utk.edu) to request to have your major changed. Please note, some majors and academic programs require additional materials for admission.

If you have a conflict with your current date, login to the registration system (https://webapps.dii.utk.edu/StudentOrientation/Register/Login.aspx?ReturnURL=ViewStudentInfo.aspx ) to see a list of available sessions. There will be a $25 change fee.

You will need to email the Center for Leadership & Service (leadserve@utk.edu) and ask to be added to the Ignite waitlist.

If you will not be attending UT, please contact Admissions (admissions@utk.edu), New Student & Family Programs (orientation@utk.edu), and Housing (housing@utk.edu) and note that you are declining your admission. Refund requests must be made in writing at least ten (10) working days prior to your confirmed orientation session. Please note that a processing fee ($25 for two-day orientation sessions and $10 for one-day orientation sessions) will be subtracted from your refund amount.
